Lord Protector of Pyrenees Mountain Dogs

It’s been my honor to rescue 2000 Great Pyrenees dogs over the past 25 years. And I have recently been given an even greater honor. I was proclaimed by the Royal Family of France to be the “Lord Protector” of the Pyrenees Mountain dogs in North America. The honor was bestowed upon me in recognition of the massive amount of dedication to the breed and their welfare. The Great Pyrenees is the “Royal Dog of France” as decreed by King Louis IV of France, back in his reign over France(1700’s). And it is the only dog breed to be declared as such. They are a cherished and protected breed and deserve protection.

Hi Charlie,
Yes, I am indeed passionate about Pyrenean Mountain Dogs/ Great Pyrenees, known as patous here in France and busy taking on their old protection jobs now that wolves have been reintroduced in so many areas.

I have been to Argeles-Gazost Festival and I would have thought some of the French breeders there, especially Nadine Lafitte (de Neouvielle affix) would have some leads to follow.

The short answer is that I have no proof re the royal dog of France. However, I think  a search in French turns up some interesting leads. https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chien_de_montagne_des_Pyr%C3%A9n%C3%A9es

That article mentions a 14thC article by Gaston Febus, mentioning Pyreneans. And also mentions the dog being ‘much appreciated’ in the court of Louis IV in the 17th C so Louis seems to be worth following up.

This refers to 1675 as The Date of Royal Dog status, which is a bit specific to have come from nowhere so that’s the year to dig deep into. https://www.paris-dogs.fr/le-montagne-des-pyr%C3%A9n%C3%A9es

I have several books on the breed and will take a look to see if there is any more evidence. If I find anything, I’ll let you know.

Keep up the good work!
